2026 Ripple of Kindness Honoree
Ken Sonnenschein, MD, FAACAP. Dr. Sonnenschein completed his undergraduate and medical school education at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, School of Medicine in 1987. He completed his training in General Psychiatry and went on to complete his Child and Adolescent Psychiatry training at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Sopnnenschien returned to his hometown of St. Louis in 1992 to accept a position on the clinical faculty of St. Louis University and was the chairman of the department of Neuropsychiatry at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Granite City, Illinois. Moving to Kansas City led to him working with the Kansas City Psychiatric Group in Overland Park, Kansas, from 1999 until 2022. During that time, he was the medical director of inpatient child and adolescent services at Menninger, Kansas City, and Research Psychiatric Center.
In 2023, he began working at Schneider Regional Medical Center in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. His work expanded to include Insight Psychological Services, Virgin Islands Child Psychiatry Access Program, and Prospect Hill Recovery and Wellness Center on St. Croix. He has lectured and written on a wide range of topics related to his psychiatric specialties. Dr. Sonnenschein continues to welcome the opportunity to use his years of experience to help people navigate their mental health symptoms.
In addition to his professional life, Dr. Sonnenschein has been involved in the formation of numerous nonprofit organizations including Mitzvah Garden KC, a community garden that brings together people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to grow over 10,000 pounds of produce for food pantries in the Kansas City area; Bike for the Brain which raised funds and awareness for mental health; All In for Skin which supported survivors of Melanoma; Kansas ElectriCITY which promoted the adoption of electric vehicle technologies; and KC Link which created connections between Kansas City resources and Israeli startups.
Dr. Sonnenschein is the father of four awesome adults and is married to and inspired by his amazing, communitarian wife, Sheila. He is an active member of Congregation Beth Shalom, The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah, and Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas.
